Know your goals! It’s as easy as “A, B, C…” As a diabetic, control of your blood sugar is important. Did you know that there are other medications and evaluations you need as part of your overall diabetic care?
Aspirin taken daily reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke in diabetics.
BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION
Blood pressure medication can reduce the risk of diabetic kidney disease — even if your blood pressure is already normal. A urine protein check once a year can help identify early signs of diabetic kidney disease.
Cholesterol medication also reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke in diabetics — even if you do not have high cholesterol already. If you do have high cholesterol, your goal LDL is 70.
DIABETIC BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL
Diabetic blood sugar control is important. Your doctor will work with you to decide the best medications to control your blood sugar based on your current readings.
Eye examinations once a year are important to detect early signs of diabetic eye disease. By finding and treating problems early, your eye doctor can help prevent vision loss.
Foot examinations every year are important in detecting early signs of neuropathy (nerve damage). Neuropathy decreases your ability to feel in your feet and often causes painful burning sensations.
